AMAZING RESULT FOR TRANSPELTOLA IN SAFETY AND QUALITY ASSESMENT
The entire Cargo Handling Group had reason to celebrate in April, when the result of the SQAS assessment of our own transport company TransPeltola came out. The result was simply amazing: TransPeltola’s operation fulfills the requirements of the SQAS system by 90%. The average of all European carriers is 76%. The evaluation, which takes place every three years, aims for continuous improvement. TransPeltola took a big improvement leap at once by focusing especially in e.g. calculating emissions and for the BBS training program for drivers.
THE GOAL IS TO INCREASE SAFETY IN THE LOGISTICS CHAIN
SQAS (Safety & Quality Assessment for Sustainability) is the safety and quality system of the chemical industry trade association Cefic. Its most important goal is to increase safety and quality in the entire logistics chain. The system gives precise guidelines on how, e.g. a transport company, a warehouse or a washing station must work. When the various actors in the logistics chain follow the principles of the SQAS system and the focus is strictly on safety, the probability of accidents and other deviations is reduced.
ALL FUNCTIONS OF THE TRANSPORT COMPANY UNDER REVIEW
In the SQAS assessment, almost all TransPeltola’s operations were evaluated. In the assesment, e.g. company management methods, risk management, personnel management, maintenance and management of transport fleet, management of daily operations and training of company staff were under review. During the two evaluation days, we answered a total of 438 questions for the auditor. In addition to the answers, the company also presents documents supporting the answer and concretely demonstrated how things are handled in the company. Driver interviews, fleet inspections and a site tour are also part of the evaluation.
THE LAUNCH OF THE BBS TRAINING PROGRAM WAS A BIG IMPROVEMENT
The SQAS assessment was carried out in April 2024 this was TransPeltola’s fifth SQAS assessment. Now TransPeltola wanted to make a clear improvement to its SQAS result. One big improvement was the launch of the BBS training program. BBS (Behavior Based Safety), program was included in TransPeltola’s driver training program. In BBS training, the driver does his own work behind the wheel and the trainer sits next to the driver and makes observations, e.g. how the driver perceives the surroundings while driving, does the driver pay attention to the weather conditions (heavy wind, rain, stow etc.), is the driver energetic or can we see signs of tiredness and how does the driver operate at loading and unloading sites. The driver receives personal feedback from the training. Company’s management uses the outcome of the training when planning new trainings.
TRANSPELTOLA’S OPERATION CLEANS SWEEP SCORE 87%
This was the first time, when the attestation included large amount of questions related to the transportation and handling of plastics industry’s products. Companies working in the plastics industry bear responsibility for the environment, and so do we. TransPeltola transports industrial plastics and therefore the subject is particularly important to us. TransPeltola has signed the Operation Clean Sweep (OCS) commitment, and we commit to act so that industrial plastics do not end up in the environment due to our actions. In the SQAS evaluation, a separate OCS grade is also given for questions related to the transportation and handling of plastic. TransPeltola did well in that too: our Operation Clean Sweep score is 87%.
