BELOR AGRO OUTSOURCED FERTILISER PLANT ACTIVITIES TO CARGO HANDLING GROUP
Kouvola Cargo Handling is in charge of fertilizer handling at Belor Agro’s premises located in Kouvola, Finland. The collaboration between the two companies started in 2014, says Markku Heikkonen, Managing Director of Belor Agro. “The best thing about the collaboration has been flexibility and establishing long-term, confidential relationships”, he says.
“The business operations of Belor Agro are based on a network model where one builds a network of capable partners”, explains Heikkonen. “We access the best expertise via purchasing the appropriate services. Kouvola Cargo Handling has undertaken, on our behalf, for example packaging, mixing and cargo loading”, Heikkonen sums up.
SAILING TO ICELAND
Belor Agro has impressive facilities with 17,000 square metres of space, making deliveries all around Finland – but, as it stands, also about 15-20% of the company’s turnover comes from exports. A couple of years ago an intriguing export opportunity was realized, as Belor Agro ventured into the Icelandic market.
Iceland has no fertilizer industry of its own, so specialty products, for one, are in high demand over there. We wanted to make a pilot delivery to Iceland in early spring 2019, Heikkonen looks back.
CARGO HANDLING GROUP WAS READY TO PLAY
Operation Iceland required some trusted partners to participate in the delivery. Kouvola Cargo Handling was up for the challenge, coordinating and executing the packaging of fertilizer packaging as well as taking care of the transport to Kotka port. “Manufactured in Kouvola, these tailor-made fertilizer products were very well-received in Iceland. Using the same concept, we made new delivery rounds in 2020 and 2021”, Heikkonen says.
COMPETENCE RUNS DEEP
This year, the fertilizer cargo was loaded into ships in Kotka in March-April and shipped successfully to Iceland once again. According to Heikkonen, the “Icelandic connection” is a solid example of what you can accomplish when your partner has versatile expertise.
